Question

I am interested in buying an '87 RS. It's in great shape, has had quite a bit of work done on it including a new engine. It runs well sounds great. I like it!

Here's my concern. The owner told me that the 57K on the odometer is wrong. He said that some point the odometer broke, it was replaced but the guy who replaced it didn't calibrate the new odometer. He said it should really be 70K. I just ran a Carfax report on the VIN. This Carfax report only goes back 3 odometer readings. It tells me the following.

4/29/92 57,408 Inspection Company
9/12/92 61,340 Inspection Company
1/3/95 76,600 New York Motor Vehicles

I am sure it has been driven in the last 6 years. Is there anyway for me to find out the true mileage? Is it a bad idea to buy this car? If I buy it should I have the odometer ajusted?

I'd say it likely has 100K+ miles on it given what you have found out from CarFax. If it checks out mechanically, make an offer based on it having over 100,000 miles.
