About a year ago I installed full Auto Meter Phantom gauges, including a 5" tach and speedo in my stock gauge console. The speedometer needle bounces all over the place. It gets real bad around 60mph, then gets better at about 80-85, but still bounces. The bouncing also gets a bit better when it is colder outside. I have a new speedometer cable running from my Muncie, and I have tried tightening it but it won't tighten any more. I have heard this might be caused by the little pinion near the output shaft. Also, the speedo is not calibrated perfectly.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the speedo cable has too much friction in the cable housing. See if you can reroute the cable to where it has less bends or angles. Was the new cable lubricated well?

There is a little clip which holds the large gear to the shaft. I've seen these real loose or even missing, allowing the gear to slip.

As for the speedo calibration. Do a search this has been discussed a lot before.

You could also add a bit of Graphite lube to the cable. It calmed mine down.

Thumbs up

I second Mark's suggestion. I have the Phantom 5" speedo in my '67. It used to bounce badly between 30-40 mph.

I disconnectoned the cable atthe speedo and lubed th cable generously with graphite speedo cable lube and it did the trick.

good luck,
