My camaro has a 4 speed manual transmission. When I'm running it hard in 4th and I let off the gas, sometimes it pops out of gear. After it does this, it won't go back into 4th until Ishift it up to 3rd and then pull it back down to 4th. It has been this way since I've had it(about a year and a half).

Well, the car is running stronger now than it has in the past, and today I thought I would see what it would do. After burning the tires for about 20 feet the transmission made a loud popping noise, and it came out of gear. I thought for sure the transmission was history, but it went right back into gear.

Can anyone give me any ideas what might be wrong?

it's been some time since i worked on a four speed, but it could be a good chance that your synchronizer gear is going out. just a guess though.

Sounds like your 3-4 shift fork is worn out. I would get it rebuilt with new forks, syncs, and bearings.
