I am currently putting together a 400 small block for my 88 camaro. I've been looking around a bit for transmissions and was wondering what I should get. I'm thinking I will have somewhere between 400 and 500lb torque when I'm done and around 400HP. Any suggestions would be great. Also if anyone has put a 400 small block in their camaro before and wouldn't mind shooting me an email so I can ask about a few specifics that would be great. [email protected]

I should have mentioned that I'm going to try and stay with an automatic trans.

Are you looking for a tranny with overdrive? If so the 700r4 is your tranny. The only problem with the 700r4s is that there is a huge difference between gears, and that slows it down a bit. Whether you go with a th400 or th350, or even the 700r4 it would not be a bad idea to have it reworked and bullet proofed so to speak.

I will soon be putting a 400 sb in my 83, and I just had the TH350 rebuilt to suit the power output of the new engine. Done right, the TH350 will take the turture, and it is lighter than a TH400, plus, you need not worry about the electronic kickdown button (TH350 has the detent cable instead; easier to adjust)

I have a 400 with a TH350 in my 78. The trans is holding up just fine.

A healthy rebuilt TH350 or TH400 would both be fine. If you wan't absolutely bulletproof, then you may lean towards the TH400. BUT.... if you go with a 700R4, plan to spend money to make it last. The overdrive is nice, but no matter what anybody says, that tranny was NOT meant to handle that kind of torque in STOCK form, especially pre-1986. Yes, a 700R4 can be built to handle 400-500 ft/lbs of torque, but it comes at a price.

i have a 700r4 and its holding upto well over 700 ft.lbs. of torque at the rear tires on nitrous.
14 chassis dyno pulls.....5 or 6 track passes.....multiple street races....driven roughly 100 miles a DAY.
runs at 170 degrees in 85 degree weather.
I dont know everything that is done to it, this post is just to show that a 700R4 CAN handle power if built right.

My T350 ran in the 11's many, many times without conplaint. I agree with the above posts, if it is built right it wil last.

The T-350 is probably the best choice if you are looking at street and strip usage. But if you don't mind a little less performance then go with the 700r. It is heavier and can deal with more hp and torque over the long term (in my opinion) better than a turbo 350.
