Question

Lately I have noticed that the tilt steering column on my 77 appears to be a little loose...has some movement to it. It does appear to be in the upper column, so I am assuming that I can take things apart and just tighten things snugly. However, before I start, I am soliciting comments or things that I need to be aware of or watch for. To be more specific, I can hold the steering wheel and rock the part of the column above the tilt pivot joint. THanks in advance for your comments... sdt

I feel your pain, my truck did the same thing. There are 3 bolts below most of the inner workings of the ignition switch and blinker assm. You will need a steering wheel puller, the tool to remove the lock plate, needle nose, a screwdriver or two and a 12 point socket about 3/8 or so (dont quote me on the size might be smaller). I had to dremel out a little material to tighten the second bolt and couldn't even reach the 3rd ('82 tilt column). But the single most important thing I learned the SECOND time I did this...use loctite! I picked the RED so I could get it back apart if I needed to, but it is vital for a long term fix. Took about an hour or so.

cosmic is right, ive done a couple myself, i think thd socket is 5\16 star, but ive used the 12pt before. Ive never taken the bolt all the way out before, always just tightened them. FYI the reason they get loose is people pulling the steering wheel to get in out of the car.

thanks guys ... the fix doesn't sound too bad. I never thought about why/how it got loose ... All I can say is that it was a lot easier to get in and out of it in 1977 ... these days, if I don't hold onto the steering wheel, I just sort of fall into it ( lol ) ... I am 6 ft 1 in ... 195 lbs... so it is not that I am carrying extra weight...just extra age ...
