Question

I have heard a lot of people (and magazines) call a 396 a small block. Why did GM call their 396 a big block? Are there both big block and small block 396 engines?

The 396 is a big block. Chevy built no 396 small blocks.

Because it's the smallest big block, if you overlook the (I think) tall deck truck 366 engine. IMHO. pdq67

You can get a small block stroker kit for 396 cubes. 350 block, 400 crank offset ground with small journal rods.

because a small block can be bored to 396, hence its still a small block but with a larger displacement.
