I have a grinding noise in my rear axel and I get a loud banging noise when I put my car into drive...what do I do?

The grinding noise could be a bad wheel bearing, and the poping noise is a broken transmission mount which is common on those cars.

Is the pinion seal leaking? If it is the pinion bearings are probably bad. Take it to someone who knows how to set op a ring & pinion set and have them check it out.

It may even be the pinion nut backing off...I fought that problem on a neighbors 73 chevy truck for the longest time...come to find out the threads on the pinion were shot and the pinion nut would back off every 1000 miles or so...causing the exact same problem.
