On a small block V8, the block casting number(raise 3/8" numbers) is on the drivers side right where the bell housing connects to the block. It is usually covered with dirt and grease. Most resto books will use these numbers to tell you whether it was used for a 350 or 327. Like on my 67 327 the last four digits are 3352 if I recall correctly.

The smalled 1/4" numbers stamped on the ledge near the right front head gives you production number and from that you can decifer date with a more detailed book.
