I crashed my 89' IROC-Z 2 days ago, and there is front frame damage. My question is do you think i should try to fix or should I find a new car, Ihave talked to a guy that is offering me an 86' Z28 for 75$, with a mint body, the only thing wrong with it is a blown engine. What should i do?

An 86 Z with a mint body? For $75.00? The front bumper is worth that to somebody. I'd buy it even if I didn't need it.

I don't think an 86' Z has a front bumper..... Sounds like a great deal to me, should be a pretty straightforward engine swap. I say go for it! KZ

Sounds like your problem is solved! Your interior should even go into that car. Good luck ~ John

Doesn't the IROC have the better suspension?? How about putting the front subframe from the Z to the IROC. The IROC will be worth more in the long run.

The 3rd gen camaro doesn't have a subframe like the 1st and 2nd gen cars do.

The 3rd and 4th gen front end understructure is all spot welded steel with fenders placed over it. If you bump into someone, often times that understructure is all bent up.
(forget about fixing it CORRECTLY for cheap).

$75 for a mint 86Z body? Sounds like someone dropped a "0" from the price, or they need some more crack fast.

For reference, I paid $500 for a car like yours (89IROC) that was completely destroyed in the front. L98, 700R4, 1LE brakes, leather interior. Went to jersey to get it too.

Bag the 86, and put the best of the 2 together. Keep the extra rear end as a spare and sell off everything left over. Assuming the car is actually selling for $750, it's still reasonably priced.

I agree with the rest of the people here.. buy the Z and combine the two to make one excellent car... you can sell the spare parts for more than you pay for the Z!!

Use as much of the IROC suspension as you can, they are better.
The sway bars are stiffer, the steering has more resistance, there is a brace that bolts on where the sway bar does.
I think the springs are better, but I'm not sure.

If we didn't keep everything from the 89 IROC (much like the cook who eats his own pie, or more like a junky who uses his own stash) - there was around $5000 worth of goodies on that IROC.

After combining the 2 - you'll have about 1 or 2 months of gas money too, or your 1st semester college tuition.

The only PITA you might have to deal with is putting the wiring from the IROC into the 86. Let's assume (hopefully for you) - your IROC has the L98 350 - the 86 Z will have a 305 TPI at best, or the LG4 305. You might be able to get the LB9 wiring harness to fire the L98.

The other issue, with the wiring, the 89 should have VATS, and an electric speedo, while the 86 is still cable driven, and has no theft system built into the wiring. Keep this in mind if you swap transmissions around.

The 86 Z28 and the 89 IROC should be identical looking, externally, with the exception the rear spoiler is thicker on the late 80's to include the center brake light. On the 86 the brake light is on top of your rear window and looks diq.
