I have what sounds like an exhaust leak, but isnt and i cant find where it is coming from, it is really [email protected]#ing me off. I checked all of the exhaust and hedders, and it sounds like it is coming from the intake, right behind the carb. It isnt the hot air chokeplate or egr either, what the he#l could it be?

Use a length of heater hose as a stethoscope for finding exhaust leaks...it won't pick up sounds from inside the motor, and it's really good at amplifying and localizing exhaust leaks.

Another way to find them is to have a friend hold a rag over the exhaust pipes while you listen for the leak. The rag will make the pressure increase and make the leak louder.

The other thing you can do is use some soapy water around the back of the carb/area you suspect noise is coming from - and look for bubbles escaping from somewhere. And check your car out while it's running at night, in the dark. I had an annoying clicking noise coming from my car, at night I could see a blue spark arcing from my distributor to the firewall - whoops.

The other option is to turn up the radio (if it works).

A common and difficult leak to find is where the header collector receives the pipes from the engine. I experienced this twice on the passenger side header, (i beleive they were flow tech,). It makes a leaky sound that seems like it comes from the rear of the engine because it leaks in the foreward direction( from the center of the four pipes). It is a bad weld in the center that blows exhaust gases foreward. To check, start engine cold and high idle. Feel for any air flow around the pipes on the engine side of collector (where all four pipes feed in) before it gets too hot to get close. Repeat on other header collector. If you feel any air pressure, the collector weld is bad and there is no fix but to replace the defective header. If you have a bad header, you'll be lucky if it is on the passenger side. Hope this helps, took me a while to find mine. Ended up replacing w/ hooker competition, so far so good.
