Red face

Thanks For all of your help with me previously on this topic, i just got around to hooking up my factory tach lead connection to the tach terminal on my hei ignition. However, now there's a problem somewhere; nothing is registering on the tach. Is there a way I can check for a signal coming from the connection on the HEI setup with a multimeter or something? Or is there somewhere else I could look for a loose or no-existant connection? (I would prefer not to tear apart the dash at this point, but if thats what it takes, then that's what I'll probably do) Thanks for any and all help.

Did the tach work before you went to the HEI? Is it a GM HEI? Aftermarket?

Sorry no one replied but I don't know what to tell you. The terminal at the distributor for the tach lead is probably ok as long as the connection is good. I think to check it out you are going to have to pull the dash apart. I did use a meter to figure out how to do this with a factory tach in my car but I don't remember how. If you have it running directly from that terminal on the dist. to the tach and the connection is good then it must be at the tach. I did mine a couple years ago but wasn't there a power lead that had to go to the tach also? You can check that connection if there is one. Personally I think you need to pull the tach to check connections to see if thats it or the tach itself has problems. If you pulled it out you would probably find the problem fairly easily if it worked then all of a sudden it doesn't. Maybe with a flashlight and a mirror or something you could try to see the back of the tach to see if a connection came off. Sorry, I am probably just rambling and not being much help but I think it needs to come out.

Dennis, I wasn't referring to you as nobody. Your reply wasn't there when I started mine and ended up there after I finished mine. Its bad enough we end up starting trouble intentionally between us members here but we don't need computers starting it.
Wasn't there a movie about computers turning people against each other then taking over the world?? or is thats what is really happening??

68SS396 - Sure.... Does it matter if the leads are reversed? I haven't looked at mine in a long time but seem to remember a white and a brown connector on the driver side.

Hmmm, can't help with the wire colors as I had to make my own harness when I did mine. I have to work 12 hour shifts Sat and Sun but if I have a chance I can take a look at what I did. I think I can see the connections on my car without pulling the cluster. If I can see what I did I'll post it Monday if you had no luck as I only have email at this job so I can't post over the weekend and I am outta here now!!.

Thumbs up

thanks for your help everyone. 68SS396, good ideas, i'll have to try them. DjD-I'm pretty sure it's a gm one, it came on the 350 that's in the car now, it came out of a 75 gmc pu and as i understand, gm started hei in 75. as for working before hand, i dont know. my uncle parked the car in a barn without the engine in it in 74, 9 years before i was even born. i assumed it worked then, but i dont take anything for granted on this car. and he wasnt much help when i talked to him on other things about the car and now he live in north carolina, so it's not very easy to contact him. oh well. well thanks for the help so far. let me know if you think of anything else
thankfully,
