Question

Showing my ignorance here. I just finished putting the '68 together and have not driven it yet but I get the feeling that I put the wrong alternator on or put it on the wrong side. It does not seem to charge the battery. I have a newer 454 in it which (from what I was told) mounts the alternator on the passenger side. The '68 had the alternator on the drivers side. I mounted it on the passenger side with the original wiring harness and the external regulator. I'm guessing that it is spinning the wrong way and therefore not charging the battery. Any suggestions? Should I try to relocate it to the drivers side or should I look for a different alternator?

Either way the fan belt (and the alternator) will be turning the same direction. I relocated mine to the passenger side (same alternator) with no trouble. I'd take the alternator to the local auto parts store and have it tested first. Then go from there.

After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that yes, you are right. It will spin the same direction. It must just be a bad alternator. Damn parts store! I'm awake now.
Next question, what do I have to do to use a larger amp alternator. I want to add an additional cooling fan and don't think the origanl 63 will be enough. Is it as simple as installing a higher amp alternator? What about converting to a single wire alternator?

Correct me if I'm wrong, you mounted an alternator with a internal regulator through an external regulator. Aren't you using two regulators? If so, throw the external reg out and rewire for the internal. But maybe I misunderstood.

You can get a pigtail to rewire the alternator to a internaly regulated one, i did mine and like it alot, lot less headach when it comes time to troubleshoot a charging problem,

Hals,
I used an externally regulated alternator with the stock external regulator.

Zappo,
Is this pigtail available through the normal parts houses? What happens to the external regulator?

I just noticed there is an alternator conversion article (article #14) in the "tech reference" section of this website. (off the home page) It looks to have the info you're looking for.

i am pretty sure that somewhere in the tech reference section of this site is a diagram of how to pigtail (rewire) the alternator to use one that has an internal regulator...then u just do away with the old regulator...did it to my 68 works great
