Question

I have a small block engine with the nunbers on the rear of the block 3976618. The last letters on the front of the block are (HV). The chevrolet castings say that the 3976618 are the numbers for a 68/69 327 or 350, but the(HV)on the front of the block say that it is a 65 vette 327. The engine is a large journal and in 65 there were only small journal blocks. I am sure that it says (HV) and that it is a large journal but I cannot find substancial evidence of what the block is with clashing numbers on the front and back of the block. If you can please help!

I don't know where you got the Vette engine ID but according to my resources thats not correct!

The suffix code HV is a 1969 350 engine with 255 HP, 4 bbl carb and installed in a full size passenge car, i.e. Impala, Caprice, etc.

BTW-Source of my info is the Chevrolet Parts Catalog and the Hollander Interchange Parts Identifier.

I have a small block engine with the nunbers on the rear of the block 3976618 - Are you sure the # isn't 3956618? If so elcamino's HV decode is correct. The 3976618 # is not present in any of my resources.

The code is correct for both, but the #618 block is a ' 69 only one. The ' 65 code is a 327-350hp, 4 speed, transistorized ignition, hyd. cam, Holley carb. The ' 69 code is for an Impala as posted above, and a large journal. I'd say you have an Impala engine.
