Were the JL8 axles tapered on the end of the axle housings where it connected to the backing plate, or was it the other way around? Thanks for the help

The JL-8 had the tapered axle tubes. Note there was an over the counter "service package" disc rear end that did not have the tapered axle tubes. Either one would be excellent on a road racer.

Cool

Cornholio have you been sniffing TP ? Sounds like you have a drum rear. And where in the rear is a Bushing ?

Clill, whats TP, I think I want some. Wait, maybe I don't.
Cornholio, I know the taper your talking about, its not the same as the JL-8. There are pictures around somewhere that I seen. If you really suspect it may be one then let us know the numbers off the pass side front of the axle tube. Is your car a Z? If your replacing bushings then maybe its a Chevelle JL-8 unit? Sorry had to throw that in, no offense.

To me the taper looks the same on a JL8,and a drum rear.Ive looked at them side by side, the only difference I can see thats not bolt on, is the brackets for the emergency brake cables.Which are welded on both sides. The codes on the axle tube should tell you what it started life out as.I agree with clill, sounds like a regular drum rear.Stay off the TP.

Whats TP? The bushings I'm talking about are the ones in the spring eyes and the ones between the rear end and the springs. Yea its a Z I just bought it.

For those of you that are Cornholio challenged. Cornholio is a Beavis and Butthead character that wanders around saying " I need TP for my Bunghole "= Toilet Paper. Are you threatening me ??????????

And he drinks "crappacino"! I figured someone would be explaining that one to you clill, not the other way around. By the way, the car is sitting in the garage and I haven't touched it in a couple of months. Too many other things going on to even think about it.
