Question

Description
i bought a motor today with 186 cast heads
the block 3970010 casting number. The odd thing is the casting number is very small how can i tell if this is a 302? Mortec.com leaves me hanging email if you can help

Check the numbers on the crank, the 302, 327, and 350 share same block specs.

The 302 crank will have an 1178 casting #. On an original block there will be a stamp on the front passenger side that will end with DZ. e.g. V0130DZ. Will have a 4 bolt main with a windage tray, dome pistons.

Check the casting date on the block. If it still has it's DZ stamp this will help determine if it's been restamped. The 010 block was first produced in April of 69 and lasted til 1979 (maybe even longer) in different configurations...

This block (3970010) seems to be the one of choice for replacement engines. I've seen it used as part of the display engines at several of the chain auto parts stores such as Pep Boys.

302 engine suffix numbers in '67 and '68 are MO and DZ in '69. Only came with 4bolt in '69......
