My console shifter locked up in December and I finally got a warm enough day to have a look at it today. Not knowing a lot about trannies and shifters I did as much as i could but need some questions answered please.
1. Does the mechanical linkage that comes off the tranny up and forward serve any purpose other than to move the gear indicator pointer on my dash?
2.Is this a leftover of the column shift days? When my console froze I twisted the column casing to change gears.
3. I wouldn't mind switching to a B&M Quicksiler style shifter but would this be compatable with a future change to an overdrive tranny?
4. I disconnected the shifter cable at the base of the shifter and the stick now moves freely. Can I assume(yeah, I know about assuming)That I just need to disconnect the cable at both ends and replace it?
Thanx in advance.

The mechanical linkage,is for the indicator, and,I believe neutral safety,in a 69? I would try disconnecting all the linkage at the trans, and try to move the shifter. If it doesn't move, the cable is bad.
