I have dropped then engine and tranny into my 69 Camaro and I plan to hook up the radiator this weekend and fire her up. I have previously removed all the wiring since it was in disastorous condition. My question is at what stage of your restoration do you address buying and installing a new wiring harness? Is it soon right after you drop in the motor and tranny or do you wait until after the car has been painted and you have the lights and other electrical accessories all setup?

Also, when looking into wiring harnesses I see there is one (under dash) that is very expensive and then they list a lot of other harnesses. What are these other harnesses for? I was under the assumption the "main" under dash harness would just have wires that ran to all the components in the car? Are the other harnesses required or just a nicety?

Thanks!

I put the wiring in prior to paint. That way I tested everything without the worry of nicked paint. Then took all of the lights and such out for the painting. There are 4 main wiring harnesses and a couple of smaller ones. The main harnesses are the under dash, rear, front and engine. You may also have a console harness, power window harness, convertible top harness..... Wiring diagrams are available at the Camaro parts houses.

I agree. It's alot easier when everything is out of the car for routing & testing the wires.
All the wires should be in place for easy hookup when the drive chain is installed.
Big thing; Check all the grounds & check them again.
Good luck,
Dan
