Got my rebuilt 327 2bbl (10:1, mild cam) installed in my 68 and finally got it to fire up. It's quite an amazing feat for me, seeing as how I am not a mechanic, and I have never done such a thing. Anyway, the fuel tank had been nearly empty and sitting for about three years, so I added about two gallons of 91 octane Texaco with a whole bottle of octane booster.
I let the engine run three times for about 20 minutes each time to begin the break in.
At the end of the third time, I noticed a ticking sound coming from beneath the valve covers, somewhere in the engine. I decided to move the distributor back some, thinking that there was too much advance, but this gave no avail. This ticking now hounds me each time I start the car! The gas is really high octane, but could it be that the old gas mixed in and runied it? I haven't yet re-torqued the heads, could that be the problem? What things cause a knock/ping on a brand new rebuilt engine? Any advice would be swell. Thanks in advance.
