i think the standard factory operating temp is 180 degrees. the engine seems to run very hot. can anyone tell me if using a lower temp thermo (160 degrees) would be OK. how much will it effect engine operation?

btw, i've got an 81 Z28, 350 engine, auto trans....

thanks

If your current temp is above 180 degs with a 180 deg stat swaping in a 160 most likely won't make a difference. The 160 will allow fluid circulation sooner but once it's open it's out of the loop unless the temp goes below 160 and it closes..

Do a search, there is a ton of information on cooling issues in several of the forums. The factory does well with what they engineer into the cars they produce. Make sure everything is operating correctly and is up to factory specs. Make sure any shrouds or plastic in the engine compartment is in place. Temps up to 210 are not uncommon and won't cause problems...
