What would be an acceptable water temp for a moderately built 396 (500 hp). Mine has been runnig at 230 degrees and that seemed like it was a little too hot.

Thumbs up

230 is too hot, anything over 200 would concern me.....I believe optimal operating temperature would be between 180-190.....KZ

My 396 has the sensor in the cylinder head. It reads about 10F high (checked by pyrometer). I run about 200-210 in the head, but the water temp at the intake manifold outlet runs 180-190. If I run it hard, it runs to about 220 by gauge, but the intake temp stays about 190.
Takes a long time to come back down to 200, too.
