It isn't the horsepower that you are missing with your new LS3 but the torque of the longer stroke BBC.

That's not exactly what he's experiencing, because he had a 396 in the car, not a 540. As Vegas said, twist it and you'll be grinning from ear to ear.

I agree....its the torque.

My best on my old 406" SBC was mid 1.50's in the 60' with the 364" SBE pulling mid 1.50's also....but with the old 406" with the solid roller, 1.65 rockers, Etc, Etc....it "feels" more powerful, I'm guessing just due to the way it made the power Vs the LS and it's much milder make up ?

Torque curve

1.54 60'--6.95 @ 98.45 660'--10.96 @ 121.53

Re: LS3 vs 396 BBC

I have a 396 in my 68 Camaro & a LS3 in my 91 Firebird.

Although I would never swap out my solid roller 396, I am very impressed with the LS3.
The LS3 will respond to a better tune, as most factory tunes seem a little rich. Mine is currently at 13:1, which is much better than the 12.6:1 it originally had. I also shift it at 6700.

The LS3 is faster than it feels, with a smooth broad power curve, whereas the 396 hits really hard in a narrow rpm range & feels much faster.
Do you have any track times from before the swap?

Pretty sure he was talking HP, not cubic inches.

Re: LS3 vs 396 BBC

This is exactly why I'm going with a LS1 with a cam vs the crate LS3. The LS3 torque power band is at much higher RPM's than I would like. The guy doing my swap said I would be very disappointed with the LS3 because you would have to rev it really high to get the power.

That doesn't sound exactly right. What cam in the LS1 and what LS3 is he comparing it to?

Cam specs would help. The LS3430 is a production level engine representing something the factory can warranty for, what, five years? Any of the factory crate LS3s are also warrantied for a shorter period, and can produce significant power. Does your mechanic have an LS1 that he's selling, or would either an LS1 or an LS3 come from a third party?

The guy doing your swap is wrong.

The OP has an LS3/480 rated at 495 HP. I have swapped several 480 and 525 LS3s.

Starting with a 5.7L 350 HP LS1 you will need heads and cam along with at least an LS6 intake to even get close to the LS3 6.2L

You can get 525 out of an LS3/430 by simply installing a GM hot cam.

And NO you do not have to rev an LS3 really high to get the power.

Re: LS3 vs 396 BBC

If it is the ugly valve cover I am just waiting for some one to do this (Hemi FirePower valve cover on a SBC) with a BBC valve cover for the LS-x:
