Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

Wish it could come over here to no. california. But we've got WAY too many 10-12 degree curves for that thing. And one 14 degree with a 1.5 percent grade. Would hate to see that thing on the ground.

It happened in 1953 to Big Boy 4005 https://www.forneymuseum.org/News_BigBoyWreck.html

Green Maint crew thru a switch right in front of Big Boy 4005 doing 50 mph

Went there, and that's quite the story. Engineer and fireman killed, lots of cars derailed with hogs etc...
Thanks for posting that. I did a bunch of work for Jack Forney of that museum in the northern part of the state. Never been to his museum though.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

Well, we watched the Big Boy on the 19th and made a you tube of it coming at ya. This is at 8000' in Tie Siding Wyoming. One mean chunk of iron.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

Does it have a Diesel Electric Engine behind it helping out?

Looks like one in the video.

Actually looks like 2 additional engines. One Steam and one DE?

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

Yes there are two steam engines. THe Big Boy 4014 and the Living Legend 844.
I think the diesel electric is there "just in case" any problems occurred.
A sight you don't see every day anymore, if at all.

Saw the 844 a couple of times. Always seemed like the diesels were working judging by the dark smoke.
Love the old trains.
My Dad worked for Santa Fe and Western Pacific.60s-80s I was lucky enough to hang in the San Diego station in his office when I couldn’t stay home alone. Surveying engineering.
Climbed around on some 1950s F units in the old Sacramento rail yard/ round house.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

The diesel is for power generation to the electrified passenger cars, no electric generators on 4014 or 844

You sure there isn't a steam generator on 4014 and 844 to power the headlights? I have no idea, but my wifes boss has an old steam engine and he was tickled when he found one for his.

Experience...... It's what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

Just doing a little more reading and apparently UP wanted to have the diesel in case something happened to the steam locos during the shakedown run and didn't want a million tons of 4014 sitting on a track in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

The diesels were there for a load to break-in the steam engines.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

My grandfather was a freight conductor for Union Pacific. Running SoCal to Vegas. Basically all they did best was drink heavily in the caboose.

We got to ride pass train Burbank to Vegas for summer 2 weeks with the grandparents. lol that's another story entirely.

Re: Union Pacific Big Boy Roll Out

I had the Lionel's as a kid and then sort of phased out of the train thing.
Somehow, just seeing a video of the big boy running got me back into them again.
They are incredible machinery and it's hypnotizing just watching them go.
I can imagine the newer engineer not having any experience on the big boy, and the absolute thrill of firing it up and making her go. Winter and summer must have been daunting times weatherwise, on board one of these. Seeing that thing coming at you is something you will never forget. Anyone know their top speed?
