Some Kid for Garfields Maro

A few more shots of the California Kid. Since the movie the wood dash panels have been replaced by aluminum. Looks like the same gauges that Pete originally used. Different steering wheel too. IIRC the beam axle was white in the movie.

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

Wow, thank ya much ! Looks better without the side pipes and the wheels really set it off.

Has it been repainted ? And what engine does it have ?? I'm gonna guess 327...

Was kind of a made for TV B flick back in the day, but at the age of 11 or 12, it sure got my hot rod juices flowin'. lol

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

In the movie the close up of the engine is a shot of the American Graffiti '32's engine. Later there's a shot of Sheen adjusting the carb and you can see it's a SBF for just a moment. IIRC Pete used a 302 when he built the car shortly before the movie was made. I think that engine is still in place.

Some work has been done on the paint. The studio gave Pete a sizeable sum (in 1973 at least) to cover the chips and other damage. He's commented that the amount was enough to make him happy he had allowed the car to go through the abuse of shooting. I was never able to find out which parts of the paint are pre-movie and which parts are post movie touch up.

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

Good to hear it's Ford powered. I like to see them built "all in the family".

Gonna have to watch it again one of these days.... Did it have a bench seat in the movie ?

Much appreciated !

I hear you about Ford engines. The BOSS has a 289 in her '23 C Cab. I'd been planning to do a SBC in my roadster but then a low mile 428 SCJ came along. Packaging may still let the little mouse win out though.

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

Well I've always been a Chevy guy, my brother was Ford in our younger years. We've both kinda mellowed in preferences nowadays. He had 351 Cleveland in a Mach I that impressed me the most. Up until then, having a front distributor was Fords only advantage in my eyes.

The "BOSS' " ride looks pretty sweet, but the thought of that big block in your project sounds awfully SPOOKY to me !

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

Speaking of Ford and movies, has anyone seen "Ford vs Ferrari" yet ??

Saw it last night. As a fan of Ford/Shelby race cars there were enough replicas to make it worth seeing but otherwise,,,,, I thought with all the available cars and replicas out there that the movie would be a bit more accurate and include the MKIV and J car but nope.

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

Thanks for the review, Ralph. Hope I didn't mislead you as I haven't seen the flick yet. I find Carroll Shelby and the history fascinating, thus the thumbs up on the story being made into a movie. I can see I'm not as well versed as you are regarding the cars etc., so I should be easier to please....

How many twinkies would you rate it ?

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

Since it's Shelby I'd give it three out of five chili peppers. Just to see some of the car scenes I'd watch it several times (when it's free on cable or Fire Stick) but I really like performance Ford stuff from the 60's. An RCR is high on my wish list.

Re: Some Kid for Garfields Maro

I enjoyed the movie.

Interesting I was talking to my friend Peter Brock (he designed the 63 Split Window Corvette and later when working with Shelby the Daytona Coupe) yesterday morning and we we talking about the movie.

We were going to the movie and it was funny he had been told by friends not be caught up in the details and just enjoy the movie.

He mentioned in the movie Shelby was driving a Porsche and he said Carroll never drove a Porsche in his life.

Movie was good fun. Matt Damon did a good job. IMHO.
