Unhappy Loose rear bumper guards on a '69

My '69 was recently painted. Over the last few months I have been finishing some of the outside trim work. Is their a certain way or sequence to install the larger factory rear bumper guards. Mine are looser than I would like where the guards hook over the top of the bumper. I have taken some time to improve the fitment of the guards to the bumper (the contours really don't match well at all). I have tried tightening guards to the lower valance first.

I have an old repo rear bumper that I cut in half to get the contour profile of the bumper. I got the guards to fit quite well. They are just a little loose.

I have not modified the hook brackets yet to see if that will secure guards better.

Ideas? Dave

Re: Loose rear bumper guards on a '69

Just tossing this out there... The material you removed to better fit the parts probably caused the clamping to not hold the guard tight against the bumper...

^^ What Dennis said. You'll have to modify the clamps (brackets) to make up for this.

Re: Loose rear bumper guards on a '69

I got the rear guards tight enough. I had to modify the hook bracket. A lot more involved than I thought when I started this project.
