1967 Camaro Convertible Restoration

I'm doing this restoration for a friend of mine. Her mother bought this car in 1968 and it has been in the family ever since.

The car is a 67 convertible with a 327 2BBL, and a 3-speed on the floor. It's Butternut yellow with a white top on the outside and yellow and gold inside.

The car was last tagged in 1985 and has been sitting untouched in a garage for the last 30 years. This car has a boat load of sentimental value for my friend and she just wants to be able to drive it again. It's going to be a mild restoration but it will be a awesome driver when I'm done.

Since I'm doing it I figured I would share the experience with everyone that reads these forums! Below are some pictures of how the car was when it arrived to me last month.

Re: 1967 Camaro Convertible Restoration

When I first got the car the plan was to get it in safe driving order so I replaced all the brake and fuel lines, brakes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, plugs wires, points, plugs, gas tank, fuel pump, bead blasted the original wheels and got some new tires on it. As you can see in these pictures everything was a bit rusty.

The car actually ran very well for sitting for 30 years. No smoke,no ticking or misses. As soon as I got it in working order she decided to dive head first into a restoration.

Re: 1967 Camaro Convertible Restoration

Surprisingly the frame, floor, and trunk pans are completely solid. The quarters, fenders, deck lid, doors, inner, and outer wheel wells are another story. Since we decided to do a restoration I pulled the engine and transmission out and started prepping to do the body work.

That pretty much brings you up to date with where I am now. I did get most the stuff I need ordered and just got it 2 days ago. You know you got a lot of stuff when a semi has to deliver it for you. 5 boxes for a total of 517 pounds worth of parts. I'll keep snapping pictures and keep you updated as I go along!

LOL, those are famous last words. I think they all start out that way, and one thing leads to the another, minds get changed, etc, etc....
Cool project with a good story. Keep us posted!

Re: 1967 Camaro Convertible Restoration

Nice project. Mine is almost the same. Parents bought in from a family friend in 68/69. Three on the floor, six banger convertible; lots of sentimental value. Been off the road for awhile now too.

Fortunately, he didn't get bitten by the original GM only parts bug like I did. It slows down progress and makes it a lot more expensive.

Looking forward to see the progress, keep at it.

Very nice! I see you bought new door shells for your project. Have you opened them up? How does the quality look? Can I ask where you got them?

Thanks!
Joe

I'm actually really happy with them. They are nice and thick and the lines are nice. I got them from NPD. They were 300 a pop.

Re: 1967 Camaro Convertible Restoration

Here is a little update as of today. We got the front dog house off and some more disassembly on the rear. Going to cut out more of the quarters tomorrow and start patching them back together along with the quarter fillers and wheel well. Also going to take off the old doors and hang the new ones. Cheers everyone!

Re: 1967 Camaro Convertible Restoration

Another update for Tuesday. Got the engine semi tore down today. Found it had mix matched rocker arms and push rods.. It hasn't ever been bored out though. Got one of the quarters hung, outer wheel well in, and a lot more disassembly.
