Big block 68 camaro build

Alright I'll start this with some background , I've grew up around cars , out of the 12 we own, 1 always stood out . My dads 67 rally sport . currently has a 406 sbc , but it holds some of my earliest memories . Something always drew me to it but I rarely even saw it . Maybe it was the illusive factor of it up on the lift under a car cover . Fast forward a couple years , till I was 8 standing there at my dads friends house who builds race cars, my dads asks me if I'm really sure that I want a 69 I said yeah I want one like yours (I was a dumb 8 year old and thought the 67 was a 69) then he said mines a 67. Just happened that that guy had a 68 . Small block car but no motor. Some rust spots but not bad . Traded the guy a motor and we were on our way. For a very long time it sat in the corner of the garage , collecting dust . Until these past few years . Full frame off , body sand blasted and primed and I started working on it . Also to mention it had quarter panels over top of quarter panels . Got 2 new full quarters and a new driver side floor pan . subframe blasted and powder coated . rebuilt the front end . Rebuilt the gauges cleaned up the tail lights and marker lights cleaned up the steering wheel , not sure if it's what I'm gonna use or not then it came time to bring it home because they finished building the garage then I started doing random stuff on it in between got the rear axle figured out and brakes all done . motor sat in there now got the windows in donor doors kinda hard to tell but it was a factory ac car so in went the tinted glass . Ok now we're finally caught up to current day , I got the motor and trans bolted up after 2 sets of frame mounts and 2 sets of motor mounts because the one original engine mount was jacked but it's in . Next step is getting headers in (not sure if they are gonna work super big hooker super comps)

You can be an inspiration to many other young people Nick so the best of luck and enjoy the journey. If you have not read the report on how Camaro's were assembled back then written by a great authority and person, John Hinkley (aka JohnZ). Might be helpful during your build.

Re: Big block 68 camaro build

If you were to ask my wife what color she would say "well Purple of course", Can you guess what color mine will be painted eventually?

Excellent thread, Nick.
I wish you the best of luck.
It appears you have a plan, follow it through and don't speed.

The AIM is the Assembly Manual. That coupled with Camaros.net and Camaros.org is priceless. The AIM is available to download free out here somewhere. You'll have to search a little for it.

Re: Big block 68 camaro build

Alright I'm at my dads for about a week starting Christmas Eve so I'm gonna to try and get a bunch of stuff done . One is kinda major , I need to get the headers in. My plan is to lift the motor out and jack the car up and slide them in from underneath . Is there a better way ? The headers are giant , and awkward , im probably gonna need to add some whacks from the hammer to add to the previous owners collection of dents lol .
