What upgrades would you do with $1k

Hello, so I have about $1000 bucks to play with for my 68 and I'm looking to make my Camaro even more enjoyable to zip around town in. My 68 has a 327 222/222 mild cam, edelbrock intake, Holley 4 barrel 600 carb, long tube headers, stock heads with small valves from the base 327. muncie m20,12 bolt rear with 336 gearing (I believe) hotchkis leaf pack in the rear springs in the front. New shocks, disc brake kit. Looks good, drives good. I want to get a little more pick up and go, should I step up the gears a bit to a 373 or 410? Grab a set of aluminum heads, or the edelbrock e street top end kit(more than a grand I know)? Sell my muncie setup and save up a bit for a tko? Save up for a lq4 swap? Choices... what would you guys do for a strong , streetable car that'll put a bigger grin on your face? Thanks for the input I know the sky is the limit but my pockets are.

Re: What upgrades would you do with $1k

I would save up and do a TKO600 5 speed.

Will make it and entirely different car.

If you want immediate bang for the $1000 buck go to 3.73s.

Do you just drive in town or do you also drive on the highway? A friend of mine's 68 Camaro has a Muncie 4 speed and 4:10 gears and it does burnouts like nobody's business but taking it on the freeway is no fun. It's revving to the moon at 65 mph. I'd suggest what Vega$69 said and save for the 5 speed.

Mixed driving, highway with 70mph limit and city driving. What should my ideal rear end gear be with the tko? 373? And which gearing should the tko final be between the two?

I like heads too. You’ll get what maybe 40 HP.

Won’t match the seat of the pants diff you’ll get with a gear change though

Re: What upgrades would you do with $1k

In the short term how about using some aluminum heads, Summit has some for around 825.00 plus 3:55 gears for around 222.00 as well. They run promo's on once in a while which could save you a few bucks. Of course there will be some added costs for gaskets, pushrods, gear set up, plus the 3:55 can be used with the Tremec down the road. I run 3:55 with my Muncie, its good all around gear but could use the overdrive on the highway once heavy footed.

Save for a TKO. Modern overdrive transmissions transform these cars.

Re: What upgrades would you do with $1k

Another vote for 5spd tranny or gears. Your current heads are lacking but you'll be driving more and farther if you are keeping up with or ahead of traffic on the highway. With improved gearing it will feel like you took 400lbs out of the trunk.

Re: What upgrades would you do with $1k

I just put to TKO 5 speed in my car last year and love it. Overdrive on the freeway is great. I would save the money for the tranny.

TKO....Looking at it as a lower 1st will "feel" better on take off with a higher overdrive to keep the revs down.

Global West tubular upper control arms.

"Our the control arm has a different geometric shape and possesses a unique camber curve associated with caster. This combination reduces the factory bump steer and provides dramatic handling improvements."

Of all the things the OP mentioned he wanted to accomplish, this is least likely to be noticeable; and there are lots of ways to improve handling beyond the hype of tubular UCAs. Just because they write it in an ad, doesn't make it true.

Re: What upgrades would you do with $1k

I'll put my $.02 in.

A $1000 budget. Gears and maybe freshen up the posi.

Save up the leftover over cash for some heads, you'll probably need around $1200-1300 anyway for gaskets misc items...

more than a 3.55 gear in a M-20 is gonna wind up a bit on the freeway, but the 3.73 would be more fun around town for sure. Two of my buddy's run the M-20 and both run 3.55 so they can still keep up with interstate traffic speeds, in the slow lane.

After running them for 3000 mi. I just pulled out the 3.50 gears that I had planned on running with my Muncie, but I switched to a TKO in the middle of my build project and sold the M20. I thought about a going to 3.89 but figured I'd give a 3.70 a try first.
