Stethoscope

I worked in the service department for a Chevy dealer 30+ years ago. Most of the guys used about a 3' chunk of heater hose with white tape wrapped around one end for a stethoscope of sorts, and always listened through the end with the tape, so of course I followed suit. For quite awhile I just assumed there was something special about the taped end until one of the guys told me if you always listen through the taped end you won't get a big glob of grease in your ear. Doh!

Anyway - works pretty good. Don't pitch that old garden hose with the smashed coupling - put it to use.

Re: Stethoscope

A nice long screwdriver works nice also

Never tried a heater hose....but will soon I'm sure, since I'm an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic. Thanks for the tip

Re: Stethoscope

Never tried a hose. Screwdrivers and broom handles usually work but sometimes you need a bend to get to where you want to listen...

Re: Stethoscope

I use a fixed antenna, with a knob installed on the threaded end, as it allows you to get into the "difficult / tight" areas. The knob prevents your getting skewered, and amplifies the noise - used this for many years. JM2C

yep... and considering the cost of mechanics stethoscope is only a few bucks, folds up nice in the tool box draw... u know its always there... havnt thrown the old bit of hose or broom handle out in the last clean up....gets into those difficult places, angles gaps.

And great tool for the children/ grandchildren play with.. listening to there hearts, or the grinding in their joints, leaks in water pipes, adjusting hot water ajax valves....that draft behind a bedroom window....

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative
