Question Type of Tape

What type of tape do I see everyone using to protect painted parts, open intake manifolds, etc. My thought is to use painters tape, but everything I see used is yellow... What is this and why is it used vs. painters tape? Cost? Adhesion?

Re: Type of Tape

I use 3M Original blue for all my work including auto painting. Not the newer 3M blue that doesn't stick well. The original does not have any print on the tape where as the newer blue has. I have the 3M yellow tape too but always migrate back to original blue because I can get it quickly vs. going to an auto paint supply house.
How I control adhesion on delicate items or freshly painted parts (a few days old) is I'll take a piece of tape and press it across my shirt before applying. This takes out some of the adhesion.

Lower cost version of the green tape.

Re: Type of Tape

Found the type of tape my inquiry was for. 3m 471 tape looks to be the type of tape I see on TV shows and individuals blogs. It doesn't leave residue, is pretty tough, and easy to form.

Re: Type of Tape

Masking parts and the car to protect when painting, I have learned the hard way years ago by going cheap. Invest in the best masking tape 3M has for that purpose. . .yellow or green. Blue is used in the home when painting!!!! I also use HD tin foil to mask certain parts like exhaust of hood hinges.

Re: Type of Tape

We use 3M 261 tape at my work (paint aircraft). Cheap tape comes apart when you try to remove it and leaves glue.

Re: Type of Tape

The 3M Automotive Refinishing tape (yellow) as mentioned previously is good stuff. It's about $5.00 a roll on Ebay or any automotive paint store.
