1970 GM 12 bolt

Axle tube stamp gone to rust and sand blasting... April 1970 date code with foundry stamps on same side. Original 12 bolt posi unit. Top cars this possibly came from? I'm thinking not likely Camaro, limited production this year for 12 bolt...

Thoughts welcome... Thanks!

Re: 1970 GM 12 bolt

I think they are 12345 and 87880 as stamped to the union of the tube and carrier housing. Are either of these or both together of use?

Thank you very much for helping to evaluate.

Brian

Brian, those numbers are foundry casting marks and won't help us identify what you have. Check again on the center section for a casting date. If it is from a Chevy, it should have a casting number.

Can you post a picture of the cover?

Big B--- whoops!

I went to the garage this afternoon and took some pictures, and also added some "before" refurb pictures for your amusement. Here is the link. You'll see the casting numbers you are looking for, I hope you can help!

One other thing... Casting date is D240, hence my earlier description as April 1970. I didn't include a picture of that.

Re: 1970 GM 12 bolt

Sorry in my last message I meant casting number, not casting date. I did see that you posted the date code. Sorry about the mixup on my part.

It is most likely from a 1970 Nova.

That casting number was also used on some late 69 Camaros, but date is too late for that.

Take some measurements and see if they agree with these in this link.http://www.novaresource.org/axle.htm
- Between centerlines of spring seats: 42 3/4"

If its from a 1970 Camaro it will have these measurements.
- Axle tube flange to axle tube flange: 55.25"
- Between centerlines of spring seats: 45 3/8"

Re: 1970 GM 12 bolt

Thanks for the guess on this and for looking up that number for me. I measured the axle flange to flange and find that it is not the F-body measurement. Overall length is the 1 inch longer that Nova resource attributed to second gen. The perch locations seem just a little off like they were moved. Also they are 2 3/4 wide inside but my springs are only 2 1/2 wide. So to use those I'll need to tack weld some shims on the inside walls of the perch to eliminate the play. It does appear that it will bolt right in.

So with that, you think this is a 70 camaro rear? Was told those are rare and figured it might be off of something else.

Re: 1970 GM 12 bolt

Probably not from a Nova if it does not have the right measurements.

If it is from a 1970 Camaro it will have these measurements.
- Axle tube flange to axle tube flange: 55.25"
- Between center lines of spring seats: 45 3/8"

A 1970 Camaro rear end overall width is about 1 inch more than a 67-69 Camaro, and the perch location is different as listed above.

Try checking the area where the stamp would be again. Usually be about 3 inches away from center section. Clean is with some brake cleaner first, they dry it. When it is dry, try rubbing a stick of chalk on the area. Sometimes that will help make what is left of the stamp visible.

Re: 1970 GM 12 bolt

Alrighty. If I see a stamp I'll let you know. In the meanwhile, sounds like a 1970 camaro rear end with the perches moved. Best bet with the info available.
