If all the basic tune up stuff is fresh, including plug wires etc. Also check compression i bet its good but its easy to check. I would then check fuel pressure and compare it to spec. a few psi below spec will make a difference, i think its 55-62 psi, koeo with pump running.

the intake is part plastic and the injectors are inside. i had problems starting, sometimes it would start and sometimes it would not. fuel pump goes bad and makes it run bad.

Id look at the coil pack. I think 97 was the last year of the optispark. Those go out, and make it run rough...

no OPTI on vortec 350 but does have special cap, rotor and wires - you need to be careful replacing the cap - you can damage the base of distibutor (its plastic) and this stuff isnt cheap. like stated above check the fuel system in the intake- I'm not sure if they had "popets" vs injectors - the 6 cyl vortecs had alot of issues with them-not sure with the v-8s - hope this helps! these motors are also known for intake gaskets suddenly failing and causing o/heating- the gaskets are plastic with silicone seals

With 80k on the clock..the poppets would benefit from an injector flush.
A proper flush..not an in tank additive.I have had great results with the BG injector clean solution. You will need to do this thru the fuel rail service port and require the remote pressure tank. Most shops will have this equipment and typically cleans up random misfires on the R engine.
