My 97 Tahoe puked the radiator

On the way to movie last night with the Mrs... temp guage pegged to the right (HOT) and light came on 'check guages' duh... I had just pulled into parking lot, so let it sit while in the movie, figured maybe a stuck thermostat. On way home, temp guage ran normal, heat coming in, it was -8 degrees.
This morning on way to breakfast with son in law, again, temp guage pegged to right (HOT) as we pulled into Perkins and right then, blewie...steam rolling from under hood. Shut down and after steam cleared, looked like the drivers side radiator hose, on top next to windshield 'add' resevoir, blowing antifreeze all over. Not sure if its the hose or cracked radiator. Had it towed to my mechanic, he will get at it on Monday. Ive never had a thermostat lock up but there was no heat in the car and engine overheating, so my guess is the 'stat'. Anyone else ever go thru this? grrrr cold weather.
Anti freeze was full a week ago when I checked all fluids, oil normal full.
The movie was GREAT, loved it, will buy the DVD when it comes out.

Re: My 97 Tahoe puked the radiator

Dang the bad luck, Click! Keep us posted on what it is. Sounds like what you think it is, though. The sides of the radiator are plastic and they do come undone, unfortunately. I even had one swell up in one area. I'll say this...I would not get an after-market radiator if I planned on keeping it.

I posted here about a possible intake water leak on my '99 Suburban, and it turned out to be a leak--they're famous for it. I talked to the service rep at GM, and he suggested I use these tablets with new antifreeze . I put 2 in my radiator and I'm good to go. The rep said that these tablets will seal the cooling system, including the intake.

After you get either your hose or radiator fixed, you may want to use these cooling system seal tabs.

Re: My 97 Tahoe puked the radiator

changing out a radiator in one of those trucks takes about a half hour and requires like 4 tools..

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Re: My 97 Tahoe puked the radiator

I hear ya derrik but with no heated garage it wont be done here by me. If it was spring or summer, Id tackle it for sure. Had the intake gasket redone about 2 years ago, oil has been good on the dipstick so pretty sure its not that again, sure hope not. Will find out when he calls with the report sometime today.

Re: My 97 Tahoe puked the radiator

Same thing happened this week to my 97 Tahoe. Same place, next to the driver's side washer bottle. 175,000 miles in the Texas heat. Had to replace the radiator and hoses,

Re: My 97 Tahoe puked the radiator

new radiator, new upper and lower hoses, plastic valve up near firewall that controls heat into the cab was cracked and leaking as well. Old radiator had 2 cracks in plastic housing, one on each side near top outlet...
Total cost $582. oh well, 160,000 miles on it and still runs good.
