Non Camaro, but need a good mechanic in Maraga, CA area

Hey guys,

I have a very good friend of mine who I grew up with that recently bought an AC Cobra Replica 460 Big Block Car, he recently had his throwout bearing go out and is having a problem finding someone to fix it.

Anyone in the Maraga, CA area that can refer him to someone that can help him instead of take advantage of him like the last two mechanics he found.

Thanks in advance for the help!

PS - I told him to buy a 1st Gen convertible instead of the Cobra.

His car -

Re: Non Camaro, but need a good mechanic in Maraga, CA area

Okay, 1st sorry for the delayed reply - a memorial and a few other family-1st necessities have kept me busy for the last few days ...

I spoke to a couple local shops that I'd trust to do this and got a very positive reply from the one I would have suggested going with first.

Have him contact 'Greg' at "Greg's Repairs" - he is in Lafayette (next town over from 'us' - the the three towns here are just called "Lamorinda" [Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda] by locals because they are so closely located and associated ).
Contact is:
Greg's Repairs
3329 Mt. Diablo Blvd
Lafayette, CA. 94549
(925) 283 - 0323
I spoke to Greg and he said he would be glad to look at it and give him an estimate and the 'Warm Fuzzy' about repairing the problem.
He will either personally do the majority of the work and/or completely supervise any work done by one of his other ASE certified guys.
Greg is a great guy and does many of the custom/performance exhaust systems for the street-rod/performance guys in the east bay area (authorized FlowMaster dealer and personal contact with 'Ray' from the start of that company).

The other 'probable' source to repair this would be 'Orinda Motors'.
Although they tend to cater more to the exotics and 'Lexus' set locally they have a good rep. for being a reliable (if not a bit more pricey) shop.
They do lots of early collector and classic work - also host the annual 'Orinda Motors Classic' car show at the nearby Orinda Country Club ( these are the golf/country club set folks go-to shop ...)
The best contact there would be the Service Manager 'John' (not me, his last name is Vanek - his number is (925) 254 - 2012.
Link to their car show and other info on web is - http://www.orindacarshow.com/

Hope this helps and would appreciate any feedback he can offer so i can discuss with them.

Let me know if he doesn't get the 'warm fuzzy' in talking with either of the shops and I'll see if I can help further.

Would like to hear his feed-back on his experience where ever he decides to go.

John, as of right now I guess the car is at - Karden automotive in Walnut Creek

They are trying to find a throw out bearing that matches???

My guess is that it will be over at one of the places you suggested by the end of the week.

Re: Non Camaro, but need a good mechanic in Maraga, CA area

I've heard of them, but never used or known of their reputation for work ...

Finding a TO bearing shouldn't be very hard ...
If it's a standard Ford set-up for a top-loader with a "Car" bellhousing - then it's either a 1 1/16" or 1 3/8" unit (depends on trans nose support dia.).
The "Car" housing is @6 1/4" deep while a 'Truck/HD' unit is @ 6 3/4" ...

He can check with McLeod Clutches;
The 1 1/16" Ford TO Bearing unit is #16031
The 1 3/8" unit is #16042

Summit should carry both for @$80 ea.
