Vortec L31 truck throwing codes

Got a '97 Chevy 1500 Z71 with the 5.7 Vortec L31 350.
For the past few years it's been throwing a misfire in the right bank, but doesn't necessarily activate the service engine soon light, even when the computer is reset, the code is still present.

The SES came on a few weeks ago and is now throwing the same code P0430
which could be any of the following:

-Catalyst efficiency low-bank 2
-02 sensor probably cause
-Catalytic converter defective (possibly due to #2, #3, #4 what ever that means...)
-Engine misfire (this is the code when I run it with a less vague scanner)
-Large vacuum leak
-Bad guides, rings, etc... leading to oil into the exhaust.

This is my beater truck, and don't want to have to put a lot of money into it, and would like advice on where you guys would start; if you've had a similar problem. If I put over a grand in this thing, it will literally be cheaper to buy another truck or engine/trans.

The only Mustang I'd ever own is a Fender.

Re: Vortec L31 truck throwing codes

I'd take it to get emissions tested to find out what's going on. The numbers that come back will tell you a lot of what's going on. They also have a problem with the distributor setup. The vents in the bottom get clogged up with debris and condensation builds up inside the cap and can't evaporate. They actually started putting a slip of paper in with either the rotors or distributor caps saying to knock the screens out of the vents and just run without them. I could always tell when my S10 needed a clean out because it would start hiccupping on wet days and then clear up once it got hot under the hood.

How many miles onthe truck? My dd Corolla with 250k was recently throwing a similar code. Catalyst in the converter was consumed.

See, that's what I'm thinking too, at idle, especially after a long drive it smells extremely "metallic" if that makes sense, I can smell a funky carbon odor and it would appear that's it was burned at a very high temp, which leads me to believe it'd be the cat.

It also has a rough idle problem very intermittently, on occasion the idle will also fluctuate from 500-1,000 when the a/c kicks on and off. I know the fuel spider is a problem with all of the vortecs. I also had to tighten the intake down in '02 because the bolts were hand tight and coolant was leaking like a faucet.

The truck has passed emissions testing every time, everything was well below the state's requirements.

I'm going to get new cap, rotor, plugs, and wires tomorrow for the heck of it, everything on the truck is the way it rolled out, so I'm just replacing those because it needs it anyway.

Runs flawlessly other than a few idle issues, never stalled, popped, sputterd etc... runs well under load and WOT.

The only Mustang I'd ever own is a Fender.

Re: Vortec L31 truck throwing codes

Update: replaced the 02 sensors on the passenger side before and after the cat, cleared the computer again, and the code is gone, didn't waste any time, and got it inspected (it was 2 months out of date) Hope it lasts another year, been a dang good truck, every piece besides the starter, alternator, battery, a/c compressor is what it left the factory with, even the spark plugs!!! I'm convinced nothing can kill this thing (knock on wood).

Usually that'll do it.

Oh yeah, and on the idle thing....Mine had a hanging idle for a while. I took the throttle body off, gave it and the IAC valve a good cleaning, and it cleared right up. Just remember to bend piece of wire or something to measure the IAC pintle height before and after installation. They self calibrate but I think if it goes in extended too far and bottoms out damage is possible.
