license plate nut broke off

Hi all, I just bought a 2009 Honda Pilot and the license plate nut broke off of the rear hatch. I'm not excited about tack welding a new nut on, but I could try. Any thoughts on a easy fix?

Re: license plate nut broke off

This is one of those threads that really needs a picture... What are the chances of someone here knowing exactly what nut you are dealing with or even what a Honda license plate bracket looks like.

If it were me I'd go to the local Honda parts counter and have them look up the part and show you the assembly diagram. Most parts guys I've run into will even print the page when asked... You may find the part is a $2 item or like I did on a Nissan once I found the only way to get the bolt I broke was to by the whole $150 assembly with the bolt included... That was all it took for me to get creative and solve the problem I created for myself...

1 word "NUTSERT"

You can buy them at many local fastener stores or ... even on eBain - http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-16-18-NUTS...-/370263344888

You don't need to buy the fancy tool(s) or anything, just use a bolt and washers to pull into place.

Drill hole to correct size
Insert 'Sert' and bolt/washers as needed
Tighten bolt until it snugs into position
Remove install bolt and washers
Install you license plate
Amaze your family and friends for being so handy ...

ps: Do the other one also

Can you get to the backside ? If so, put a bolt trough the hole and put a nut on it. Put the license plate on and install another nut on the same bolt or use a wing nut.

Thanks for the picture... I bet these would work as well as John's suggestion.

Re: license plate nut broke off

I would get one of those screw into a dry wall solutions, you know the kind with the plastic insert that is shoved into the dry wall and then a screw goes in and expands. Seems like something like that would work fine for this application.
