Aluminum block, iron head v8

I ran across a v8 with tiny exhaust ports, siamesed in the middle, just like a SBC, the heads are iron, and the block is aluminum (yes, you read that right), I was told it was from a FWD vehicle. There is no paint on the block, the valve covers are black, so I am assuming it is late 80's or early 90's. Casting numbers would tell all I know, but I can't look for another few weeks being away, and I didn't have the time to search/write any numbers down. Intake has ports numbered like any sbc/bbc. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I think you could be right. Are they worth anything? Worth even the time to tinker with? Can get it for free, would throw on a distributor, intake and carb on a stand. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Aluminum block, iron head v8

In 1984 I bought a new Caddy Eldorado that had a motor with an aluminum block and cast iron heads. That car also had FWD. It was disappointingly sluggish when trying to haul that relatively heavy car around although it got fairly good mileage for that era. I recall hearing that those engines had continuing issues with cam bearings although I never had any problems with it. I sold it in 1987 with 35,000 miles on it. I wouldn't consider it a good basis for any performance application.

Good luck.

Re: Aluminum block, iron head v8

My grandpaw worked on, and owned many cadillacs, and so did my parents, I've heard nothing but problems from most 80's FWD caddy's. I was hoping it'd be some short stroke, small CI engine that could wind up to 9k or so and have fun with. Too bad. Looks cool though! I'll get the casting numbers and post pics if I can, should be interesting to look at none the less. Thanks again.
