Question 2000 dakota will not shut off

I am painting a truck in my shop that is a 2000 dodge Dakota. I was sitting in the drivers seat removing the door trim to remove the weather strip. At that time just out of the blue the dash lights came on and the buzzers started sounding and the fuel pump started buzzing. I have seen the movie Christine so I quickly got out of the truck. If you saw the movie you understand, if not it is a must see. The key was not in the ignition, and the truck ran great when I got it. I then put the key in to see if it would start. It started fine, but will not shut off without pulling the engine relay. I tried the battery cables first, and the truck ran. I plan on replacing the ignition switch this weekend, but was wondering if any of yall had any other solutions. Thanks " not a dodge fan Keith"

I know it is a dodge, but still. I replaced the ignition switch on the column, with no change. If my weed eater worked like this my yard would look great, but it has the opposite problem. My weed eater must be a mis labeled ford model. Any help would be great. Thanks Keith.

Re: 2000 dakota will not shut off

Have you looked at any of the wires under the dash or the ones you can see on or coming from the column? Maybe you when pulling on the trim parts you bumped some exposed ignition wires? Any signs someone did a hack job and fixing old wire issues and our they are show up?

Edit: Also look for signs of a remote start.

Re: 2000 dakota will not shut off

Thanks Erik, I found the problem today. It has a factory radio amp under the drivers seat. I have never seen this before. It must have shorted out. I unplugged it , and my problem is now gone. Crazy Dodge crap. I was asked to put a new Alpine unit in it anyway, so no big deal. I would have never thought to look under the drivers seat for a starter problem.
