Awd

Having an difference of opinion with tire dealer.I need one tire replaced on a awd buick that have 4 snow tires on it.

question;

Being a awd, I've been told it's ok to replace the one tire with an all season tire.Is this true?
BTW. I'm in Florida and can't find a matching snow tire.
Any help is appreciated

Steve

Re: Awd

Steve, It's never a good idea to run mismatched tires on
the same axle. Especially the front. Makes for squirrely
handling.

Re: Awd

It's not a safety issue to replace one tire with a different brand if the size is the same, the tread pattern is close and it's in the same classification. The handling characteristics of snow, all season and summer tires are very different although the all season tries to bridge the gap between the other two. I would look for a used tire locally or off ebay before buying a new mismatched tire.

That said, what are you doing with snow tires in Florida? Snow tires do not perform well once the ambient temp comes up and the tread will wear very fast. That's another reason to not buy a single new tire as the other 3 snow tires will need replacing in no time.

Another thing to consider with the AWD is how the power is distributed and managed. I am not sure but believe the Buick is front drive biased so you would be better mixing the tires on the rear axle than you would on the front if you end up doing so.

Re: Awd

We are vacationing in Florida. Half the trip from Ontario is usually snow covered plus when we return it's snow covered when we get back(except this year being warmer than usual).
I don't think I'm going to find a snow tire in Florida on ebay or anywhere else for that matter. one place said they tried to get snow tires for a customer and found it impossible.
I agree mix matching the rears is a better option.

Re: Awd

Based on you heading back to snow country a single all season is going to make braking in snow and ice very dangerous. I've seen demonstrations where it takes 5 times longer to stop with all season compared to snow tires.

I don't know what size tire you need but ebay has 800 ads for used snow tires. You can also go to Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and order a new one, hey have all kinds of snow tires.

Re: Awd

Also... some AWD cars you can not replace just 1 tire as it will destroy the transfer case (like running 2 different size tires on a posi unit)

Re: Awd

All 4 tires must be identical in circumference with GM AWD. If not, you will get a warning light after reaching 6 mph.

Re: Awd

Unfortunately AWD cars don't like tires of dissimilar sizes. Some are so sensitive if your tires are something like 50% used up you can't replace one with even the same brand and make. It will damage the differential.

Re: Awd

Don't know where you are in FL but there are Discount Tire stores all over it. They can order and expedite one.

Discounttire.com is their walk-in store site to find locations.
Discounttiredirect.com is the mail order site. Heck I bet if you ordered one you'd have it in a few days, they've got three big national warehouses they pull from. Pulled up a snow tire for a Buick Enclave just to see and they show delivery to Orlando in 3-7 days for free with 2nd day and next day available but it would about be cheaper to get four new tires local than pay for next day.

I used to have a Subaru and have a Jeep with 242 transfer case (full time 4wd option, essentially awd)....On an AWD car to be safest with the drivetrain preservation if it is not listed in the manual you should always assure all tires are same brand, size, and model. If one ever needs to be replaced it's also supposed to be measured and shaved if necessary to bring it within manufacturer specified tolerance to the other worn tires. This has a little info on some manufacturer guidelines but the owner's manual should have details.

Re: Awd

Thanks for the info.
We are moving around the State and I didn't want to take any chances having a blow-out so I went with a new set of all seasons.
I have my wife, daughter and three grandkids so I wasn't taking that chance.
Thanks for all the input. It made me make the right decision. Tires were roughly 650 US or $900.00 CDN. Transfercase and/or transmission replacement several thousands. Family safety-priceless.

Re: Awd

Good idea, it's only money. You might even be able to sell the three snow tires as rare collectors items or curiosities while you're down there.
