1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

Going to look at a Chevy C30 that appears in pictures to be in great shape. 70K miles roughly.

It has a rebuilt title and the current owner says it had that title when he bought it.

my question is what are the negatives of this besides the potential of being harder to resell?

Insurance more costly? Less coverage?

I am more thinking of this as a hauler and one I can tinker on but not considering a massive rebuild or restoration

Thoughts would be appreciated!

Oh yeah this is in Illinois

Thanks

Most of the large insurance companies will try to turn their noses up on covering it. If you have a long history with a company they may do it for you. Talk to them before pulling the trigger.

Re: 1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

I have a friend that rebuilds newer wrecks. He won't touch one with a bent frame, especially uni-bodies. You might want to do an inspection of the frame to find any damage and take it to an alignment shop to be sure the front end is in alignment or can be aligned. C30 frames are heavy and hard to straighten.
If I had details on the wreck, I would feel a lot better when buying a rebuilt.
X2 on checking with the insurance company.

I would not touch a salvage, rebuilt or branded title unless I was looking at 100% track or just for a parts car

Bah! 1970 Chevy with a rebuilt title? I wouldn't even give it a thought. Most of our Camaros should have "rebuilt" titles. It's just a piece of paper unless you're looking for pedigree.

Its only worth parts if you can't get insurance.

Compare the same cars with a clean title v a branded, salvage, rebuilt title. The market value is substantially less because of “the piece of paper”.

Yes I agree and even though I have confidence in my ability to check it out well I decided I did not want a vehicle that could be difficult to insure or resell.

Re: 1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

Usually, a rebuilt title isn't a serious problem, if any at all. An inspection might be needed, but if the vehicle is in reasonably good order, it should pass with no problems.

I have a 1964 Chevy C30 V6 5 speed, dual ratio rear end, 1 ton flatbed I use for my work vehicle. If it were a C10 or C20, I could have insured it with the rest of my vehicles on Farmer's, but, it being a C30 and 1 TON, it goes bonkers in price. So, I went to Hagarty, and a mileage restricted policy, Nevada State minimum through them, for a historical vehicle, 15K miles per year (Of which I will never drive that much), $110.00 per year. I maybe drive it 8K per year, maybe, usually somewhat less.

Re: 1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

So much wringing of hands over something that is not even a proven problem. My niece had her car totaled for paint scratches when it was sitting in her parking spot during hurricane Andrew. No water damage, no broken glass, just paint scratches that the insurance company paid her for. She wanted to keep the car but the insurance company gave her a branded title over the deal. All over paint!

Bunch of crybaby's that would think nothing of resurrecting a rust bucket Camaro but not wanting to deal with a rebuilt title when they haven't even seen the vehicle in question. Next thing you know you will be expecting a clean Carfax on every old classic you even think of buying.

Jon N

The only reason someone would want insurance is if they want to pay someone elses bills or want someone else to pay their bills.

Re: 1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

Wow, I never knew redoing a "wrong title" car made me a 'crybaby', or 3 year old. I never had any problems with getting titles working right, including when I lived in Kalifornia, and here in Nevada. too bad I missed out on being a crybaby and 3 year old over them, sounds like I have missed a whole bunch of that stuff in my 70 year life.

Re: 1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

Dave / Rufus, you weren't crying about having a branded title. Evidently you are smart enough to handle any titling problems that may have come up.

Others.... not so much.

Re: 1970 C30 rebuilt title Illinois

No crying, whining or hand wringing just stating the facts as I see them

I agree a branded or salvage/rebuilt title in some cases should not be a concern.

That said it does make a tremendous difference if and when you decide to try to sell the car.

If it's one you're gonna keep forever the no biggy. If it's a low priced vehicle and you don't mind taking a hit down the road the so be it.

If it's a big $ car or one you plan on putting a lot of time and money into with the thought that you might sell sometime then IMO a very bad idea.

Think about this.

You can build and over the top Resto or start with a bare roller and build a very nice car. Or maybe a nice car with a SBC or BBC with things done right.

Now if the car has a 6 cyl VIN you will not get near the same $ out of it as one with an 8 cyl Vin. Make no sense but that's the way it is. S/B/R title even a bigger hit. Again makes no sense with a classic but that's the way it is.
