Starter issue with my TrailBlazer

My daily driver is a 2008 TrailBlazer LT with the LS4 5.3 engine. 118K miles.

I recently developed a grinding screech when I go to start it. At first it didn't happen on every start but now it is happening almost every start.

Do you think it is time for a new starter or starter coil (Bendix)? Or, is there a chance the flywheel ring gear can be damaged?

Any idea on costs involved?

Re: Starter issue with my TrailBlazer

I'd go new starter and sooner then later before the flywheel is damaged.

Thanks John.

Yes, I figured you would say that. I'm right in the middle of wrapping up renovating my daughter's first house and this is the last thing I needed.

I just looked at the video's available. If it was my Camaro I'd do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunayely this is a 08 TrailBlazer and it's a little tight in there. Checked w/Rock Auto and starters range from $70 to $160 plus shipping. One video claims it's a 3 plus hour job. So if I got it into a shop near me right away, I'm looking at a $450 to $550 bill.

I could order the starter (RockAuto) and do it myself for the cost of a better unit even with the shipping for around $200.

I've just got to clone myself to be able to be in two places at once. Ugh! Guess I'm going to bite the bullet and bring it to the shop.
