Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

I have a 2001 3.8L 5 spd, it has been running very badly and the service engin light came on. It kicked out the code P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire. Where do you guys recommend that I start on this thing, or waht could be a logical troubleshooting process to attempt to clear this thing up?

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

Am I correct that this engine has a coil at every cylinder?

one coil for every 2 cyl, pull the wire off the # 2 coil crank the car it should spark at the coil if you see no spark at the coil the coil is bad if there is spark the wire is bad

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

Thanks 67camaross, could i also use an inline spark tester at the coil end of the wire instead of the open spark?

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

UPDATE: Fixed, I tool 67camaross advice, however, I checked the spark with the in-line spark tester at the coil. No spark there, replaced the coil, car is running great, now I gotta go get the code reset.

Thanks 67camaross

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

A spark tester is a good idea. I have heard of coils and ignition modules failing from an open lead. My guess is the voltage finds its way to ground through another path that damages components. Good work finding and fixing your problem.

I've GOT to get one of those in line testers! Beats the heck out of the "screwdriver in the plug wire" tester I have now!

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

If anyone can help....... now that I have replaced the coil, the car will randomly not start at all!! You can crank away at it for several minutes, than one try out of the blue, it will fire right up. Often when it does this there is a loss of throttle response and no acceleration. Any ideas? Weak fuel pump maybe?

I would still get a complete tune up cuz it doesnt sound like you did one since you got the car

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

Have done a complete tune-up to include wires, plugs, air filter, but didn't change all of the coils, it didn't seem necessary to me to do that. I am leaning towards a faulty cam or crank position sensor. This morning it decided not to start again, so I threw a spark tester between the coil terminal and the #1 wire and turned engine over. No spark. So I moved tester to every other terminal and wire and tried to crank, no spark from any.

After just bumping the engine over a revolution or two each time, it started after 10-15 tries of just bumping it(not just sitting there continually cranking). So I am thinking that if either the cam or crank position sensors are not properly reporting their position then the ECU will not allow the coils to fire. Someone correct me if I am wrong. If anyone knows a decent way of testing these please let me know thanks.

Re: Cylinder 2 Misfire code P0302

CAM SENSOR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RUNNING IT CONTROLS SEQENTIAL FIRING OF THE INJECTORS IF ITS BAD IT WOULD STILL RUN . I WOULD CHANGE THE CRANK SENSOR THERE CHEAP 30 OR 40 BUCKS THE ONLY OTHER THING IT COULD BE IS THE ignition MODULE ITS MOUNTED UNDER THE COIL PACKS AROUND 100 OR 200 BUCKS I THINK ITS A CRANK SENSOR
