service engine soon light comming on

I have a 94 camaro and the service engine soon light comes on every once in awhile. I have noticed it usually only comes on if it is a bit warmer out side but not always. I have tried to get the obd to show the code but I have been very unsuccessful. I have tied a paper clip and a so called code key but nothing. Any other suggestions of how to get the code with out spending a ton of cash would be great. I think it might be the O2 sensor but not sure. The car also has about 137k on it.

Re: service engine soon light comming on

unfortunately, scanning it would be my first suggestion...if it wont read with a code key, you might have a bad ground at the aldl connector...i forget which pin is ground...maybe everett knows...or you could look in the schematics in your haynes manual...

sometimes you`re the windshield and sometimes you`re the bug...

Re: service engine soon light comming on

cj,
Around here a couple of the big auto parts chains like Autozone will read the codes for you for free. Just keep in mind that does not really tell you what is wrong, only what code is set. You still have to figure out what set it. Having an O2 sensor code stored does not mean the O2 sensor is bad. It only means that it is not showing the ECM what it is expecting to see under certain conditions. It could very well be a bad sensor, but it could be twenty other things too.

Re: service engine soon light comming on

Be sure to get the actual code(s) and not their interpretation of them.

Also, OBDII started a phase-in in 1994, so yours may be an OBDII vehicle. Look at the emissions sticker to see if it is OBDII compliant. Also, some 94 owners may be able to tell you. If it is OBDII don't short any pins on the ALDL to get codes. It won't work and it may damage your ECM.

Re: service engine soon light comming on

i think gm started using obd2 in 95, but the connecter will tell you one way or another...aldl is rectangular with a locating bar in the center outside...obd2 has one long top, and one short bottom with sides of connector at an angle...

sometimes you`re the windshield and sometimes you`re the bug...
