Engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

I all of a sudden have an engine noise in #7 cylinder. when I pull the plug off # 7 cylinder , it goes away . Its like a "ticking noise" . I am thinking a valve let loose or head gasket?

when you take the plug wire off? i assume that you did that and noise goes away. it is a wristpin knock.

If equipped, header gasket leak at the cylinder head, or cracked manifold?
Only after other suggestions given first.

I would go for the collasped piston skirt.....
Climb underneath or put the car on a hoist a shirt tends to be laoder from underneath the car.

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

how much $$ would I be looking at the get the piston fixed ? would that be rebuilding the motor?

I noticed last night that the header on the 7th cylinder looks like it has lots of corrosion around it. could it be cracked causing a leak?

Yes, or rusted.

You can remove the spark plug, squirt some oil into the cylinder, re-install the spark plug, and during engine start-up, view the smoke coming out the crack/hole.

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

I would try the easy remedy 1st. That being the header leak or crack before I go diving into the motor. I'm not saying anyone is wrong. All I'm saying, you may get lucky and it be a bad gasket or a cracked header and you won't even have to go into the motor. I know when I had a bad header gasket, it sounded like valve tapping.

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

I looked at it again and it seems like noise is coming from valve cover area and not the lower part of the motor....I put my hand around header area and could not detect any leaks.

valve adjustment possibly??

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

It could be something as simple as the plug wire arching to the header. Rule out the simple things before you tear down the engine.

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

Start the engine up at night with no lights on and do a visual, if the header is leaking that bad or there is a crack somewhere you might be able to see where it is.

the oil in the cylinder suggestion is good also.

Very possible. Be sure to have vc/cover gaskets handy first.
Use the ICEO method;
intake closing, adjust the exhaust valve
Exhaust beginning to open, adjust intake

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

Use a long scew driver, one end on different parts of the engine the other pressed to your ear....or better still buy an elcheapo mechanics stethoscope

Re: engine noise in #7 cylinder - 302 V8

what is the ICEO method? Never adjusted valves before, but per the manual it looks easy? Let me know i f I should try this myself or hand over to a PRO.
