old 350 block

hello Team Camaro Members,

my name is John and i am new to the whole chat form online thing. im 29 in the military. i have a 1974 Camaro that only my hands have and will touch. i raced my Camaro at the local Speed way several times. so i have beat the crap out of this car and for the most part she holds together. well 362,089 miles later she gave out. understable and i am now using an old block that was just sitting around in one of my civilian mentors garage. the block. it is a two bolt main with the casting number 3970010, it was just a short block; block, crank, pistons, heads and flex plate. it looked pretty solid and looked clean other then the dust and dirt that has been sitting on it. my first issue it that i didnt strip it down i just took the good parts off my motor and installed on this motor. when i had every thing installed new and old parts, it was ready to start. but it back fired instead and blows fuel back out through the carb. a friend told me with an old engine that has sat for a while i should pour a little film of oil down the cyclinder and then try to start it, to free up the rings. well i did and it still dont start any ideals? or am i a jack *** kid that needs to start all over and rip it all down again?

Welcome to Team Camaro!

Sounds like the distributor may be installed 180 out. Pull the valve cover and verify that both valves are closed when the rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder.
