multiple problems with running the car

first what would be great timing for a minimally above stock 350sb, and what is a good set up for a 650cfm edelbrock 4brl carb(electric choke). but now to the real question i know there might be more than one things causing this, but i'll give it a shot.

it idles just fine sometimes, but when i rev the engine anything above 3krpm it comes back down and hesitates around 1,500rpms, then goes back to 800ish, but if i rev it up pass 4.5k or really high it will come down and die out.

Re: multiple problems with running the car

More info what ignition/distributor set up do you have and do you have a MSD box....

Whats the timing set at right now and what mods have you done to this before the problem...

Carb what is the float levels set at including the fuel mixture screws and how much fuel pressure do you have....

Grounds do you have good ground straps on the motor to frame in 3-locations....

Re: multiple problems with running the car

i have a stock distributor, MSD Blaster coil, but i never bought an ignition box, timing is 2 BTDC i believe, it was sounding better around there, the float level is the same as when take the edelbrock carb out of the box, the screws for air/fuel are both 4turns towards rich from completely closed.

Re: multiple problems with running the car

First thing first is timing/ignition.

Pull the coil wire off and take out the #1 spark plug, put your finger over the hole, have a friend tap the motor over until you feel air push you finger off the hole. Next take the distributor cap off and check to see if the rotor is pointing at the #1 wire on the cap (if not then its off a tooth).

Then after all the above is done, start it up and set the timing to about 4-8* BTDC with the vacuum advance hose on the distributor disconnected and plugged off. Now plug the vacuum advance hose back in and to manifold vacuum port (constant vacuum pot at idle)

Now set the carb, start off with the mixture screws set at 2-turns out (counter clockwise from seat)..

If you have a vacuum gauge handy put a T on it between the vacuum advance can and the manifold vacuum port and turn the idle down to about 800rpm's and check the float level to see if at idle a little dribble comes out while idling and with small, very small adjustments to the mixture screws turn them in one at a time watching the gauge and feeling the motor telling you what it wants either more AFR or less AFR. The higher the vacuum gauge reads the smoother the motor will run and thats where it wants to be.

Once you have tunned the carb set the idle double check the timing and fine tune the carb...

But always make sure you have good grounds and check out this link bellow it may help.

Re: multiple problems with running the car

Have you checked the fuel filter? Those symptoms could be a nearly plugged fuel filter that allows enough fuel to idle but not enough to run.
