2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

02 SS will turn over great, just won't pick up & crank. Been at dealer for three weeks, four new oxygen sensors (2nd time replaced). Next day after bring it home..same thing. Any suggestions?

fuel pump?
crank sensor?
do you have spark?

Re: 2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

To add to Bill's suggestions, pull spark plugs after cranking - wet with fuel, no spark; dry plugs, no fuel.

O2 sensors don't have anything to do with starting.
Injectors have battery power to one wire? - fusible link or corroded connection at fusible link or need new inj power relay.

Re: 2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

sounds like a coil pack or worn our plugs?
run down plugs will run lean and throw a o2 sensor codes..and will also throw misfire codes if the plug electrode is burned out..!!

Tell them that if they put in a new motor and it still doesn't fire that they will eat the cost of the replacement motor and the labor, since it was misdiagnosed. May make them work a little harder to find the true problem.

Re: 2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

With misfires, I am going to say coil packs. I know my 98 Z started having issues with them around 105k. I had a bad one on a 02 mustang GT and it ran terrible, but it would start everytime. There are some many sensors on them, it really could be anything.

Re: 2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

Why on earth would they be trying to sell you a new engine? Can't they do a compression test? If it has low compression then dig in. If it has good compression, then fuel, and spark at the right times and you should have a good running engine. Maybe I am oversimplifying......

I was at the dealership yesterday, getting the oil changed in my wives car. They came in a told a lady her husbands truck a 07 needed the tranny fluid and filter changed. It was acting up or something on the lines of that. They told her after she said they would wait on the 480.00 to do it, that checking it in under the hood would show its good. It was supposidly when they checked it at the drain plug, it was dirty looking. Wouldnt it be dirty on the stick as well? That makes no sense to me. Sounds like they are lying.

The drain plug has a magnet build in...
But $480 is an expensive transmission service.

Re: 2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

Dealer got back to me..after 02 sensors replaced & still no difference..They say my fuel pressure regulator is bad, as well as two injectors. This could cause all 02 sensors to burn out. Who thinks its sugar in gas tank?? Just a thought....

Re: 2002 SS mystery problem, won't crank?

If they've replaced oxygen sensors then I suspect it's cranking or your mechanic suckered you. Think of old cars that had cranks. If it cranks it turns over, and over, and over, but won't start.

Here is a no-crank scenario. My 2002 had a delco battery in it. The battery said 72 month AC Delco on it. Just a few months after the OEM warranty ran out, my 72 month battery started leaking around the positive side-post. Needless to say it made a mess of my power cable, frame and other stuff. ... and so much for 72 months, they would only cover it under the OEM warranty.

Fast forward to a month ago. I noticed my idle speed was surging one day on my way home from work. I now realize it was going through a relearn proceedure, but the car ran great otherwise. I got home, shut it off and noticed the radio didn't keep playing like normal. I went to start it and nothing.

That positive cable had corrosion around it (though not fuzzy green) and developed bad connection. I cleaned up the connection and it fixed it right up.

Again tell them you are not paying for them to throw parts at it they are a dealership and are supposed to have the training and knowhow to properly diagnose this issue. The likely hood of 4 oxygen sensors going at the same time is very remote, not to mention the fact that they wouldn't have any effect on if the car starts or not. Make them abundantly clear that nothing is getting paid for if they cannot prove the parts they are replacing are truly defective. This is a no start issue not brain surgery, and there is no way in h3ll it take over 3 weeks to diagnose a no start, cmon get real. I'd say it's time to find a different shop and tell this dealership to take a hike. Either that or you need to call and lay down some wrath of GOD type stuff. lol And how do you determine two injectors aren't working if the car won't friggin run? Regulators go bad on gms all the time but you would have noticed hard starting, rough idle, poor fuel mileage, and eventually engine light before it would cause it to not run. And even if it has sugar in the gas tank the should be able to get a fuel sample out of the tank to check, which by the way a fuel contamination test is one thing they should have already done to make sure the gas was even good. It sounds like you are either being taken for a ride or the techs working at this dealership are obviously in the wrong proffesion.
