Engine turns but will not run.

Pulled out the distributor cap and noticed that they are some red brownish dust around the inside of the cap and on the rotor. I used compressed air to clean the dust off and wiped the inside of the cap with a rag. When I put the cap back the engine will turn but will not run. I took out the cap and also the rotor and there are a lot of the red brownish dust on the centrifugal advance weights. Is this an indication that I need a new distributor.

Re: Engine turns but will not run.

Thats normal over time but you did the right thing by cleaning it otherwise it can cause problems. You should also clean/scrape the build up off the terminals inside the cap.

Are you sure all the wires to the coil etc werent disturbed? What you described wouldnt cause the engine to not fire.

Re: Engine turns but will not run.

yep as above that brown dust is normal..good clean up every now and then is fine.
Did you remove the HT leads then turn over the engine..then put the leads back in the wrong place....Pull a HT lead off a plug, check you have spark
What sort of dizzy?
Check u havnt knock any old insualtion off the wires inside, or if hei broken any wires that go thru the side of the cap inside the insulation....a pionts the same.
Check with a volt meter, starting at the coil moving thru the curcuits...and an ohm meter to check continuity.
It is going to be something simple like the above.
One of those things we all do every now and then "crap I feel an idiot" lol.
I would hate to count the times I have cleanup inside and forgot to put the rotor back in lol

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative

Is it points or HEI?

If HEI, and you have 12 volts to the dizzy, you could have a bad module/knocked a wire loose on the module while cleaning...

Re: Engine turns but will not run.

Did you put the rotor back in right? They don't fit real good but they can be screwed in(close but not exact) 180* off.

Re: Engine turns but will not run.

Did you actually get the cap back on?
I notice the rotor still laying there beside the tools when picking them up before firing up...I never like tools laying around when firing up.

Re: Engine turns but will not run.

pulled the center plug from the distributor and there is no spark so there must be something wrong with the connection to the coil

Re: Engine turns but will not run.

I think it's the coil that is bad. Ordered a new one but is on backorder so I'll have to wait a couple of days.
