2001 GMC Sierra Warm-up Issues!

OK....I know we have a few GMC Pickup owners out there. We have an '01 Sierra 4wd with a 5.3L Vortec that, all of the sudden, idles terribly when first started up in the morning. Outside temp has been in the 30's lately. Seems like the choke is coming on and off and it idles very rough. I have to keep my foot on the gas to get it warmed up. Once warm...she runs fine. Any ideas are appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Do you have a Check engine light on? If so get a code and it will be easy to diagnose. Many autoparts stores will lend a code reader to you for use in their lot.

Re: 2001 GMC Sierra Warm-up Issues!

Remove the throttle body from the front of the intake and clean thoroughly. The EGR dumps into the intake just behind the TB, and the back of the TB (which has the small idle air passages) gets pretty gummed up. My 01 4.8L liked to have the TB cleaned about every 15K to 20K miles.

Best cleaner is GM top engine cleaner in spray form.

NEVER argue with a stupid person. They bring you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.

Re: 2001 GMC Sierra Warm-up Issues!

Well, it's been awhile since I started this thread, but I thought I would post an update. The nasty idle during cold mornings resurfaced and we've been living with it for too long. After doing a little more research, I discovered that a common reason this happens is due to faulty intake gaskets. From start to finish, it took me darn near six hours to complete the job. No issues at first start-up and the initial test drive went fine. We'll see how she idles in the morning.
