2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

This morning on the way to work my oil pressure gauge pegged out.
While running, the needle is absolutely maxed out even beyond the highest reading on the gauge. When I cut off the engine, the needle falls back about 1/2 to 3/4" but still is not even reaching the highest reading.

Temp and dipstick look good.
No indications of actual engine problems aside from this crazy gauge.

2005 Silverado, 5.3l with approximately 95k miles.
Never had a problem one out of it.

Any ideas?

Oh, and I own a 67 camaro vert...so this is Camaro related.

Re: 2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

most likely the servo motor in the gauge. fairly common problem with this era chevy trucks. If you know some one with a good scan tool, you could do a gauge sweep test with it to se if the gauge works thru its proper range. If it doesn't gauge is bad.

NEVER argue with a stupid person. They bring you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.

Is this something they could do at Autozone?
I've heard they have a scan tool and will read codes if your engine light comes on.
(Although I do not have an engine light on)

I think the zone ust has code readers. You need a scan tool with bi-directional controls. Beware the zone. They for the most part have no clue about how the vehicle works they just wanna sell you parts. You would be better off taking to a competent repair shop u trust. they should be able to confirm fairly quick and easy, its a short simple test to run.

Re: 2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

There are a couple guys that repair the clusters on Ebay. They say you can still drive your truck with the cluster out. They replace all the servos and its like a week turnaround.

Bet you have a bad servo. Google it to see what the internet has to say.

Re: 2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

Do a actual oil pressure test on engine...if ok, install new GM (ONLY) oil pressure sending unit. the shop I work in will only use oem sending units...believe me, we've tried to use aftermarket..don't work...we have Autozone 100 feet from our shop...NEVER USE THEM AT ALL! j

Re: 2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

I'd lay odds that it's the stepper motor on the back of the instrument cluster circuit board. I've replaced them for that same reason.
The next thing will be the other gauges going wacky... one at a time. Common issue.

I have one or two left over from a 2003 Silverado if you want it. It's easy to change if you can solder. Pop the new one in, turn the key and WA LA!

I agree with Joe. I replaced the sending unit, still same problem and that part is around 50.00. It was the stepper motor.

Re: 2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

HwyStarJoe is our big winner. I had a sweep test done on the gauge and it is the stepper motor. Guy wanted $436 to replace it. I kindly declined his gracious offer.
Sending PM to HwyStarJoe regarding his offer.

Thanks guys!

I went thru a guy on ebay who redid all the gauges. Eventually all of them could fail. My speedometer was the issue for me. It was easy to pull the cluster out, box it up and send it. I think I got it back the same week. Yes, you can drive it without the guage cluster. I think it cost $150 or something like that to do all of them.

Actually post #2, then post #5, then Joe was right. I would get with Joe on the servo motors but like Jonesy said they will all eventually go out.

150.00 you get all of them changed and if you have the trans oil temperature it will cost a little more.

Re: 2005 Silverado - Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out

My apologies, review of the play has determined bighaas79 to be the winner.

If I can pull off replacing just the oil pressure one for minimal cost I will probably go that route.

Thanks again guys.
I appreciate all of the help.

Can you solder? Or know someone who can?
Won't cost you a cent.

I'm sure I can git'er done.
You are a true gentleman, I don't care what the other guys say.

On a serious note, thank you very much.
Your hospitality is all too rare these days.

Thanks and God Bless.
