Transmission clicking/knocking

I have a automatic 2001 V6 Camaro and there is a loud clicking/knocking sound when I accelerate. It sounds like it is coming from the transmission. Another thing is it only happens in the colder weather. Anyone ever have this problem or have any ideas?

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

Easy. Crawl under the car, grab the drive shaft and wiggle it. There should be no slop. You'll be able to see it easily if either joint has failed.

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

Does the clunk sound come on when you take your foot of the gas under decent load...ie, if you're going 20 mph in 1st or 2nd and goose a bit and then letup, do year hear the clunk?

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

Or does it clunk when you downshift - like it does in this video when this 700R4 is downshifted from 4th to 3rd multiple times

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

When its in park it has a slight clicking, either getting on it or just barely accelerating the clicking is louder. And yes, it still does it if i'm going 20 and get on it.

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

Good news it should not be your crank thrust bearing (that's what my issue was) as you should not hear it when in park....

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

When it's in park, engine running, how much time between clicks? Ten times a second? Once every ten seconds? Dull click or sharp tinkle?

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

Check the flex plate for loose bolts. Also check to see if it is cracked around the crank bolts.

Re: Transmission clicking/knocking

I was thinking flex plate bolts as well. Oh, by the way, it was sleeting here about an hour ago. Looking at low 20's mon/tue night. Ya, it still gets a cold in FL. Good thing is it will likely be 60-70 within a week. Let us know what you find with the flexplate bolts.
